Chapter 20
Violet Lee nudged her friend, almost knocking the china teacup from her hands, âsheâs here, Della,â she said as the door opened and Mirela walked in, âleave it to me.â
âOh, hi, mammy, hi, Della,â Mirela said, smiling at them both, âI think Iâm going to have a lie down. I didnât get much sleep last night.â
âOh no you donât, madam,â Violet said, standing up, âyouâll come on in here and sit with us for a bit. Thereâs things we need to talk about.â
Violet watched the range of emotions flitting across her daughterâs face and felt a heavy sense of dread. For days now sheâd ignored the rumours flying around the site about her girl. It was par for the course living on a site within a small community. Tittle tattle was all it was, surely? Mirela wouldnât dare be sneaking off to spend time with a boy. A boy who wasnât her betrothed, and definitely not a gorger boy. She wasnât that stupid, was she? She certainly looked like a rabbit caught in the headlights right now.
âDonât look so scared chickadee,â Della said, causing Violet to scowl at her, âitâs just me and your mammy, weâve been hearing some rumours is all.â
âI can tell by her face!â Violet spat, âitâs not all lies at all, is it, girl? What the hell is going on? I want the truth!â
âI donât know what youâre talking about, Mammy,â Mirela said as she edged her way around the trailer to sit at the couch opposite the one Violet was at, âwhat rumours? You know what the gossips are like around here.â
Violet felt like slapping her daughter, the cocky little mare. It was clear she was up to something, and she knew it now, it was written all over her face. She struggled to fight down the rage and remain composed as she stared at the girl. If all sheâd heard was true, then Bo Lee was going to go ballistic. Minimum! Della had been with her all morning trying to get her to ignore the whispers, the knowing looks and the smug comments from the other women, but now Violet knew without a doubt it had all been justified. They all knew something she didnât. Well, she was damn sure she was going to get to the bottom of it.
âJust shut your mouth and listen, girl,â she said as evenly as she could, pointing a finger at her daughter, âyouâve been sneaking off away from here and lying to me about it. Thatâs a fact, so you can admit that first and foremost, right now.â
Mirela looked shocked and her cheeks reddened before she answered. âOkay, mammy, youâre right,â she said, âI have been, but itâs nothing sinister, I swear!â
âI fecking knew it!â Violet said, throwing her arms up above her head, âand thereâs you, Della,â she went on, swinging around to her friend, âthereâs you telling me Iâm wrong, and that my daughter wouldnât be so stupid!â She turned back to Mirela, âitâs a boy isnât it? A fecking gorger at that!â
âMammy, no!â Mirela yelled, âno, itâs not.
